| Synopsis : | Artist Yong Look Lam grew up in a kampung, and was entranced by the beauty and tranquility he experienced there. He now feels a sense of responsibility to document and idolize these fleeting structures and ways of life for future generations, before they are lost completely to modernization. Dubbed as the ‘Kampung Boy’ by his contemporaries, Look Lam’s urban and rural landscapes glow with nostalgia - time appears to stand still and they exude a quiet, magical charm. Look Lam was born in Klang, Selangor in 1962. He obtained his Diploma in Fine Art from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1982 and a diploma in Watercolour in 1983. In 1984, he won the second prize in the Malaysian Landscape art competition held at the National Art Gallery. Since then, Look Lam has travelled extensively, from Putrajaya to Penang; steadfastly capturing detailed images of fishing villages, kampung scenes, ancient shophouses in small towns, stalls and modern government buildings onto sheets of watercolour paper. Look Lam is a founding member of the Malaysian Watercolor Organization and is the Honorary Secretary of the Negeri Sembilan Art Society. He also manages ‘Willow Art Center’ in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. The Opening reception for this exhibition is on Sat, 6 Sep 2008, from 3pm - 5pm). |
