| Synopsis : | Entry Points, the first programme of 1948 Artspace, an arts and cultural space and resource centre that seeks to engage the creative energies and interests of current new village residents in art and cultural activities that brings together people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines. Entry Points is a contemporary arts project that aims to reach out to community through long term interaction, grounded by processes of finding and working with "entry points" between art and community. This second exhibition of the project will feature works by artists Hoo Weang Leang, Lim Kok Yoong a.k.a. Wing, Minstrel Kuik Ching Chieh and Wong Perng Fey. ~ See You in The Sky - Wing's participative project with SK residents and visitors, 2008 Kite flying is a favourite sport among Seri Kembangan residents; kites dotting the evening sky is spotted daily in the village. It is entertaining both for the care-freeness of mind it brings as well as the playful competitiveness of 'cutting' an opponent's kite and retrieving it as a "prize". Wing's See You In The Sky builds from the SK residents' habits of kite-flying - it is a happening, a kind of social apparatus - as well as an installation. It is a shared communal experience in a common space - the SKY. Nap by Minstrel Kuik, digital print, 2007. Minstrel returns home to Pantai Remis for annual family rituals and festivals, and has been quietly photographing her family during their times together. Detail from Untitled by Hoo Weang Ieang, oil on canvas, 2004 Hoo implodes her canvases with inscriptions of symbols that seek to empower a sense of self. Painting becomes an act of searching for as well as exercising personal courage and curiosity. Entry Points is supported by The Annexe Central Market's Grants for Grabs. |
