Synopsis : A joint exhibition by artists Tang Yeok Khang and Pheh It Hao, who present a surprising yet credible view of the modern world in motion, and a view of life from unexpected angles, respectively.

Tang Yeok Khang as an artist started before he exchanged his hometown, an idyll of rolling glades, for the inconstant urban setting of Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur, like all metropolises, is forever reinventing itself. Full of superlative symbols of 21st century civilization that speak of national pride, there however remains an irrepressible vortex of chaos surrounding the glory.

So the artist decided to turn his attention to the humanitarian side of life. He began to examine in earnest the whys and how’s of the urban condition.

~

The inspiration behind Pheh It Hao's collection of paintings here had come from an evening stroll through the old heart of the town, with all artistic thoughts banished.

A structure would present itself, demanding in its grandiosity or historicity. The artist all of a sudden found himself being dictated to, his freedom to create curtailed.

But he also had a choice. He could choose to swim against the current of expectation by re-imagining the structure. He could, for instance, home in on the bare side-wall of the structure instead of its palatial entrance with the pillars with hand-carved dragon and phoenix motifs.

This is the spirit of the ‘Window Journeys’. It is all about rendering the familiar unfamiliar in an effort to acknowledge the worth of the unseen.

The exhibition opening will be officiated by Ar. Yew Kuok Chuan of KC Yew Architect, on Sat 8 Nov 2008 at 8pm.
