"There were always people like the pope. They serve a certain function, of course. They subsidize us. But, they don't create anything and they must never be allowed to stop the artist from creating"

Synopsis : A showcase of contemporary creative art works from artists working inside Burma/Myanmar, this art series seeks to highlight expressions that are experimental and alternative to mainstream practices inside the country.

This first show will present over 100 pieces by artist Soe Naing, executed in ink and paint on paper and canvas.

Soe Naing, whose painting style has gone through periods of transition - from bold brooding expressiveness to gentler flowing line-work - is well known within Burma and has received international exposure in several exhibitions in Europe and Asia.

His works have been collected by both the Singapore Art Museum and Fukuoka Art Museum.

This Seeking to Connect series is curated by artist Jay Koh, with Malaysian artist Chu Yuan, as the project adviser.

As part of the series, there will also be a talk by Jay Koh, and a performance during the exhibition opening by Burmese artist Moe Satt in collaboration with Malaysian musician and artist Justin Lim. Both of them are at present the artist-in-residence with Rimbun Dahan.

The talk by Jay Koh will centre on how artists negotiate the social and political environment in present Burma in order to produce art and to survive.

It will also touch on the social cultural conditions that allow experimentation and exploration in professional art practices.

~
Jay Koh founded IFIMA (International Forum for InterMedia Art), an organisation specialising in promoting intercultural collaborations and resource-sharing, in 1995. IFIMA has been active in Burma/ Myanmar since 1997 and managed a training and resource-development centre named NICA (Networking & Initiatives for Culture & the Arts) in Yangon from 2002 to 2006.

Seeking to Connect is partially intended as a fundraiser for resource-development projects and activities inside Burma, which will be initiated, managed and run by Burmese groups, with IFIMA acting as advisor and facilitator.

Half of sales proceeds will go to the artist and half will be channelled to such projects and activities. (Cross cultural collaborations, translations of art writings, workshops, art events, etc.)
