Synopsis : “Rhinoceros” is by Eugene Ionesco, one of the proponents of absurdist theatre. At first, a rhinoceros is heard walking through town. Then suddenly, one appears, and another, and soon, one by one, people start turning into rhinoceroses, until finally, a couple is left - Berenger and Daisy. Do they really want to live in a world overrun by rhinos? Isn't it better to just become a rhinoceros yourself?

Christopher Jacobs, who directed the equally absurdist Metamorphosis by Kafka, and earlier this year, Lady Swettenham by Sabera Shaik, directs this staging, adapted to a Malaysian setting. The cast are Lim Soon Heng, Terence Swampillai, Ha Wei Na, Nicole Ann Thomas, Kay Chin, Kay Li, Jodie Lariviere, Lim Kien Lee, Derek Ong, Baki Zainal, Silvester Loo and Nor Hazlin Nor Salam. Produced by Masakini Theatre.

Form 1 to Form 5 students have been invited to take part in an interactive session at the matinee performances, for RM10 each. Prior to the performance, students who are interested will be given Act 1 to read, and a workbook in which they get to design the set, costume, sound effects, etc. After the performance, they get to discuss their ideas with the director, designers and producer of the play. Masakini intends to make this an annual affair. Next year, a play for children will be produced.
