Synopsis : A school. A dead body. A scandal...

Chep and Burn are top students in Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarram Shah, an elite school in Kedah. Burn is the school’s golden boy (Head Prefect, Captain of the Hockey Team) and his best friend Chep is feared and admired by the younger boys for his quick temper and skill on the hockey field.

The school is well respected for its strong academic and sports record. However the discovery of a dead prostitute in the abandoned railway tracks near their school unravels the status quo and we discover a less golden world of bullying, sex crimes and violence.

Best friends William and Asif go from innocence to experience as they are caught up in the repercussions of the murder. But who is really responsible for the murder, and will they be held accountable?

Air Con challenges and interrogates the hypocritical habit of turning youth into scapegoats in times of moral panic. Ultimately, it casts a gentle albeit unflinching gaze at the perilous path of male adolescence, and interrogates the heartbreaking ways in which society often expects boys to become men.

Air Con is award winning singer-songwriter Shanon Shah’s first full-length play, developed under the banner of The Instant Cafe Theatre Company's (ICT) FIRSTWoRKS playwriting programme.

Directed by Jo Kukathas and Zalfian Fuzi and introducing Amerul Affendi, Firdaus Che Yahaya, Hazarul Hasnain, Nick Davis, Ryan Lee Baskaran and Zahiril Adzim. Also featuring performances by Nam Ron, Chew Kin Wah, Dara Othman and Ismady Wakiri.

Presented in Bahasa Malaysia (Kedah dialect) and English, with surtitles.

I watched Air Con last night and thought it gave me so much more than promised by the synopsis and promotional material of the play. Its tagline is "A school. A murder. A scandal." Its poster simply portrays two young men in their white school uniforms set against greenery.

What the ten performers deliver, however, is an epic story about growing up male in this society. They show how blurred are the lines between sexual identities and what the consequences are of conformity - especially when harshly enforced. At what cost do we become regular boys and girls? The performers tell the story with great humour as well as emotional depth and agility. It will stay with me for a long time and I hope many get to see it.

AIR CON is our 'Dead Poets' Society. Amazing writing, direction and acting. Needs to be made into a film. And needs to be seen by everyone.

Refreshing like Air Con! Humbled by the vast display of talented performers and gutsy script. Highly recommended, and this extends even to those who don't consider themselves much a theatre fan. If you miss this, it's not like you can go out and buy the DVD or wait for it to show on TV during Hari Raya. So go see it. Now.

Where can I buy the ticket? Do u think it's a wise idea to go buy it at the door?

Hi Nadia. Tickets can be purchased at the KLPAC itself, and there's also a counter at The Actor's Studio in Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC). Best to get tickets in advance as they sell quite fast. If you really have to get them at the door, then try to be there extra early.

Fantastic. I grew up in same-sex school environments (all girls' school, then shifted to an all boys' school for Form Six), and although the situation never got as violent as it got in the play, the tension between the characters and the problems the characters face were very real. I found myself comparing the play not with other Malaysian plays I've read and watched, but with stuff by Eugene O'Neill.

I enjoyed this play very much. All the actors did an excellent job playing their role. I can see the audience are very pleased with the show and some of them even give a standing ovation. Touch on reality with daring script in a humorous manner. Thanks to all involved in the play for an enjoyable afternoon!!

Hats off to all the talented cast! All 10 are brilliant, good characterisation and tight interactions. Thanks to the brilliant direction from Jo and Zalfian, well done!
I enjoyed the play so much so that i didn't realised it was already 3hr+ long :)

The set, sound and light designs were fantastic too. It was another excellent show after RACE.

I went with little inkling as to what to expect from a benign advert and was blown away. I feel extremely proud that we Malaysians come into our own with a first- rate script, drama and performance which causes us to look at ourselves in our context, think and be mindful of how we act and react. The relatively young cast was superb. No one overshadowed the others, each delivering its character so fluidly. Shannon, I hope to see more of your works on stage which grapple with current issues in Malaysia! Thanks and Bravo!

Ceghita petang kemarin yg saya tengok syok gila lah weh! Cuma nak habaq mai sikit, slang kedah tu hat depa dok cakap tu ada yg sikit tak kena lah ... orang kedah kan, depa ada jugak guna words ong putih , contoh dia lah kan, macam market, kami apa guna market bukan kata pasaq ka apa. Ada lah juga hat depa dok cakap Kedah tu macam tak kena, tak seratuih peratuih lah ... so writer tu (dengaq kata dia oghang kedah juga) kena lah lebih detail lagi lah no dlm penulisan script tu ... ha nie ada ka oghang Kedah guna "mai datang" - mai tu dah kira datang so kalau mai datang kira macam typo error lah hehehe
.
hat lain tu tak dak apa lah nak komen, saya gelak gila tengok !!!! ..... kighim salam kat mimi, mona, asif, dara (ish dia dok baca ka email nie ) chep, burn, cikgu hensem , ustaz (terror - sungguh ustaz nie) - regards to ah kok (ah kok baju bersih tak dak kotoq apa !) and william .... The only thing wrong with air con is the fact that it was staged for SUCH a short time.

Restage!!!!!!

This is something every Malaysian should watch. Twice.

I sokong the proposal for another run of the play. Shanon Shah's script was excellent, the casting so apt , the pacing was so effective that the audience didnt realise they had sat thru a 3-hour performance! What I loved best was the genuine camaraderie and concern between Asif and William, the tenderness and affection beneath the macho exteriors of Chep and Burn, the genuine friendship and affection shared between Burn and Aishwariya . We find ourselves laughing not AT the budak lelaki lembut, but WITH them, we find ourselves sharing Asif's agnst, and we find ourselves unable to condemn Chep for his brutal act, nor Burn for his because we see how society is insiduously responsible for shaping their behaviours and responses. The play is a resounding success - authentic in its language, boldly touching on unresolved (sensitive) issues in contemporary Malaysian society , and unflinching in its critical stance on the hypocritical, positivistic solutions readily resorted to by ( an absent) authority . Well done, playwright, directors and the actors who were absolutely unbelievably incredibly CREDIBLE ! And a special round of applause for Aishwariya Roberts!

The play in itself was brilliant, with underlying messages of how tolerance is necessary in a society where there are individuals who live out of social norms.

However, I felt like killing whoever was controlling the subtitles....

Brilliant play, and ground breaking. There should be a grand tour around Malaysia, shown to wider audience especially the school teachers, students, parents.... Or to be made into a film!
Survived without subtitling, thanks to great acting!

Heart felt and spectacularly conceived especially on the scene where William was being raped. It is most shocking and potentially upsetting scene and is disturbing enough to change almost anyone's opinion about despising efferminate males. Two thumbs up for the acting of each and every actor. If this play is restaged, I will go see it again!!
