Synopsis : Out to dispel the notion that history is boring, the Five Arts Centre join forces with a bunch of other creative Malaysian personalities, to present an 11-day multi-arts, multi-angle festival.

Dubbed the Emergency Festival! the audience are promised a buffet spread of works that includes cutting-edge theatre performances, an exhibition looking at ‘rakyat-centric’ perspectives of the Emergency, film screenings that explore the unknown Malayan Revolution of 1948, and a dynamic concoction of daily presentations and participatory events from prolific arts personalities.

What's in store:

Exhibition:

Thu 16 - Sun 26 Oct 2008 (11am - 5pm)
12 Years, curated by Wong Tay Sy, Norman Teh and Grey Yeoh

“…the victor writes the history while the loser fades away…”
Is that always true? Challenging this notion along with new ways of presenting history without being preachy, one-sided and linear, this multi-angled exhibition focuses on contextualising visual materials from the Malayan Emergency within our contemporary framework.
It offers an alternative and interactive approach to presenting history, and offers often unheard rakyat-centric experiences of the Emergency.

Theatre Performances:

Thu 16 - Sun 19 Oct 2008 (8.30pm)
Operasi Oktober, directed by Fahmi Fadzil

&

The lives of two good friends change forever when they are forced to leave everything behind by the British army and start afresh in a New Village during the Malayan Emergency.

~

Film Screenings:

Mon 20 Oct 2008 (8pm)
10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka, directed by Fahmi Reza
This cult favourite chronicles the events culminating in the Malaya-wide Hartal day of protest against the undemocratic Federation of Malaya Constitutional Proposals devised by the British colonial regime, and the rise of the rakyat's democratic movement in Malaya, ten years before Merdeka.

 &

Mon 20 - Sun 26 Oct 2008 (8.30pm)
Revolusi ‘48, directed by Fahmi Reza

Thu 23 Oct 2008 (8.30pm)
Special Event: Director's Commentary – Live

The sequel to Fahmi Reza's 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka, Revolusi ‘48 chronicles the largely forgotten armed revolution for national liberation launched against British colonial rule in Malaya 60 years ago.  The documentary tells the untold story of those who struggled in the anti-colonial guerrilla war of independence, during the Malayan Revolution of 1948.
