| Synopsis : | Under the baton of Claus Peter Flor, The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Borodin Quartet perform Martinu's Memorial to Lidice (H296) and Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra, and Suk's Asrael Symphony (Op.27). Josef Suk named his symphony "Asrael" (after the Angel of Death) to mark the tragic death of his father-in-law, the composer Antonín Dvořák. Bohuslav Martinů's – whose 50th death anniversary is marked throughout the MPO's upcoming season – piece reflects on the tragic events of 10th June 1942, when all the male inhabitants of the Czech town of Lidice were exterminated by the Nazis, and the remainder of the population sent to concentration camps. |
