| Synopsis : | It is 1965 and in Japan, the country has started to shift from coal to oil. The old coal mining towns begin their long slow decline, all except one small town way up north, where the leaders and local mining company aim to save the town by building Japan's first Hawaiian Village. There is one problem: What is a Hawaiian Village without a troupe of Hula dancers? The villagers do not even know what the Hula is! Based on a true story, Hula Girls is a heartwarming comedy about coal miners' daughters who took a once-in-a-lifetime chance to escape their monotonous lives amidst the skepticism of the villagers, as they fall under the spell of one talented and determined dance instructor from Tokyo. Winner of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress & Best Screenplay at the 30th Japan academy Awards, Hula Girls is directed by Lee Sang-il and stars Yasuko Matsuyuki, Etsushi Toyokawa and Yu Aoi.
