Synopsis : Based on a comedy written by the legendary Félix Lope de Vega (1562-1635), this story revolves around the life of Diana, the young, attractive and intelligent Countess of Belfor. Her secretary Teodoro is engaged to Marcela, a lady in the Countess's service. Diana becomes jealous of Teodoro's love for Marcela and punishes the lovers by separating them. She manipulates Teodoro's feelings, igniting and frustrating his desire by turns. She dictates events with a combination of lies, tricks, false identities and a sexual anxiety held in check by her position and social esteem.

This excellent film displays the considerable skills of Pilar Miró as well as the brilliant images achieved by cinematographers in Spanish cinema. As the film is based on a Félix Lope de Vega play characterised by the most baroque and exquisite use of the Spanish language, it is extremely amusing and entertaining, and repays close attention to the plot twists and turns.

Screenplay and direction by Pilar Miró. Starring Emma Suárez, Carmelo Gómez, Ana Duato and Fernando Conde. Spanish with English subtitles.

Awards: Winner of 7 Goyas 1996 (including Best Director, Best Actress (Emma Suárez), Best ,Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design and Costume) Mar de Plata (Argentina) Film Festival 1996: "Ombu" de Oro for Best Film.

Festivals: San Sebastian 1996, London 1996, Montreal 1997, Chicago 1997.
