Synopsis : The Dance Department of Akademi Seni Kebangsaan announces it latest and grandest production ever! TAPESTRY will display Malaysian traditional dance in all its diversity, beauty and splendour. This spectacular production has taken 5 years to produce as it has involved painstakingly putting together traditional dance that primarily has only an oral tradition. Traditional Malay dance has unclear origins and various nuances that often differ from one master to another. In the effort to locate the experts of the various genres, through research, interviews and trial and error, a lecturer from Melbourne, Australia – the eminent Dr. Zamin Haroon @ Chandrabhanu, and traditional masters from Perlis to Johore to Sabah were sourced. The leading scholar and writer Professor Dr. Mohd. Anis Md. Nor was consulted. The late master Said Manaf who taught generations of Malaysians and whose system of education is revered in Malaysia, Habsah Mohammad or better known as Mak Usu from Kampong Tenglu, Johore, and Tuan Haji Ismail from Pulau Tiga in Perak among them, are the unsung heros of our traditional dance. Their continued contribution to Malay dance is ensured with the teaching systems implemented at ASK. The recent inclusion of Chinese Dance and Indian Dance studies in the curriculum of ASK allows us to be known as a truly ‘National Arts Academy’. Doyennes of Indian dance Radha Shetty and Vatsala Sivadass and one of China’s premier artists, Zhou Gui Xin, now living in Malaysia are now a part of the faculty, have also prepared the dancers for this grand occasion.

This intense process began with more intimate evenings of traditional dance such as Malam Terinai, Jendela and PeTA has resulted in living traditional dances being presented in the current context. We are now ready for the resplendent presentation that we hope will bring back the pride of being Malaysian or perhaps even instill a little more fervently our feelings of patriotism. Let us reclaim our glorious past and the wonder of our cultural heritage.

The evening will weave a simple narrative that begins with the Mengadap Rebab, Asyik, Dabus, Zapin Pekajang, Piring, Endang, Indian Dance, Chinese Dance, Ngajat Iban, Rejang Beuh, Limbai, Magunatip and Joget.
