The Annexe director Pang Khee Teik calling for a dose of humour of how Malaysians deal with issues of nation building at the opening of "Bebas Lah Malaysia".

Visitors were tickled that Eiffel Chong's works of girly dolls were sitting ducks for defacement. For the scribbler's convenience, marker pens were dangled from the wall. These were, however, suddenly taken away, for effect.

The presence of poet, photographer, playwright and multi-talented artist Bernice Chauly adds to the energetic atmosphere at the exhibition opening.

A visitor takes in political activist Hishammudin Rais' portraiture of former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in "Kalaulah 1" (left) and former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in "Kalaulah 4"

Irreverant sniggers and tongue-in-cheek comments surrounded Hishamuddin's Einstein-like portraiture of Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Artists du jour Aswad Ameir (left) and Jailani Abu Hassan muse about the muse behind Hishamuddin's portrayal of (from left) the country's DPM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Anwar and Anwar's wife, and Keadilan stalwart Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Tembak Shots: The Annexe @ CM's "Bebas Lah Malaysia" by Veronica Shunmugam
A picture is worth a thousand words, and Kakiseni wholeheartedly agrees! Our latest weekly segment:, “Tembak Shots”, is a peek at art and cultural happenings all over the country.
On the eve of the 50th celebrations of Merdeka, when the air was rife with racial and religious posturing, The Annexe @ Central Market went to town with an art exhibition, "Bebas Lah Malaysia", that asked viewers to come with a sense of imagination and generous doses of humour.
Sensing the vibe of expectancy that permeated the gallery during the launch, Veronica Shunmugam decided to grab a bit of the atmosphere as well as some of the nifty artworks to put on show on our Tembak Shots.~~~
