BOH Cameronian Arts Awards

"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life."

CROSS-CULTURAL CHAMPION OF THE ARTS AWARD
Prize of RM1,000 sponsored by Kakiseni

Pang Khee Teik

Malacca-born Pang Khee Teik is a writer, arts critic, photographer, actor and some time interpretive dancer.

He is currently the Arts Programme Director for The Annexe, which under his direction has become a platform for KL's community of artists and activists, particularly those interested in multidisciplinary, thought-provoking and socially-conscious work.

The gallery hosts all manner of arts – visual art exhibitions, contemporary dance and theatre, fashion shows, activist workshops, art bazaars, indie films and music among others.

He had created many successful programmes including the affordable art bazaar Art For Grabs, the sexuality rights festival Seksualiti Merdeka and the community arts fund Grant For Grabs.

As the former editor of Kakiseni.com, Pang covered all the various arts with equal passion. He engaged writers to produce thought-provoking and entertaining analyses of performances and local cultural issues. Then and now, he believes in questioning normative definitions of culture as those derived from "official" versions.

Being an artist himself, Pang had performed in independent films, theatre, the occasional TV commercials and one experimental choreography workshop. He has contributed articles for various top publications, been a fashion photographer, exhibited his photographs in art exhibitions and read his writings at public readings.

Pang is regularly invited to speak on the role of the arts and artists in society, and in January 2008, he was one of two Malaysians selected by the US Embassy and The Kennedy Centre to represent Malaysian arts presenters in a cultural programme in New York and Washington DC.

In 2008 also, he represented Malaysia in Japan under Japan Foundation's programme titled "Urban Community Development Inspired by Culture: The Potential of Creative Cities".

Pang has and continues to create and direct programmes in his effort to build a critical and artistically aware society, and for that, he is awarded the Cross-Cultural Champion of the Arts Award.

BOH CAMERONIAN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Prize of RM5,000 sponsored by BOH Plantations

The Temple of Fine Arts

The Temple of Fine Arts is the sanctuary for the arts founded by His Holiness Swami Shantanand Saraswathi.

In 1981, Swamiji, with the help of his devotees and dance teachers, - Shivadas and wife Vatsala, and Gopal Shetty and wife Radha - inspired the beginnings of the Temple of Fine Arts.

The aim was to help Malaysian youths rediscover the cultural, artistic and spiritual wealth of their forefathers and to make it relevant for themselves and for future generations.

Swamiji believed that music and dance were essential to the holistic development of the child. He envisioned that The Temple of Fine Arts would be the place where any child could learn music and dance from teachers who understood the true source of creativity and inspiration, and without the burden of costly fees.

The institution quickly grew and within five years, it boasted of a student population of more than 800.

Students were taught Bharatanatyam, folk dances, semi classical movements, and musical instruments such as mrdangam, veena, flute and harmonium.

The hundreds of students and graduates of the institution have gone on to achieve amazing things, many taking their craft to dizzying heights both locally and abroad.

The Temple Of Fine Arts consistently stages numerous award-winning dance, drama and music performances each year. These works are choreographed, directed and produced by the teachers, students and other members of the institution, and often with other local and international collaborators too.

In 1991, Swamiji mooted the idea of a multi storeyed building that would enhance the mission of serving the community in many ways.

The year 2008 marked the realisation of this dream - a 5-storey building, complete with dance and music studios and performance hall, together with a library and other amenities, is now a reality. It promises to be a permanent platform to educate and nurture artists and art enthusiasts for generations to come.

For their continued and unwavering dedication to the enhancement and promotion of the arts – just for the love of it – The Temple of Fine Arts is awarded the BOH Cameronian Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Awards Ceremony for the 8th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards took place on Sun, 18 April 2010 at 8pm, at the Emerald Room, Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur.
