special awards

1. Tumasek Pewter Best Design Award
  • Endgame, presented by The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre
2. Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur Fan of the Arts for Most Promising Artist Award
  • Fahmi Fadzil
Actor, community arts practitioner, writer, lecturer and Wayang Kulit enthusiast Fahmi Fadzil is a long time member of theatre ensemble Akshen and arts collective Five Arts Centre. Last year alone, between running ArtisProactiv and researching Wayang Kulit among many other things, he squeezed in stage time as part of the Second Link and Going North theatre productions.

For his enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to the arts, and for continuously pushing himself to greater heights, Fahmi Fadzil is awarded The Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur Most Promising Artist Award 2006.

3. Best Community Arts or Arts Education Project Award

  • RISE Programme
The Rise Interactive Spastics Enablers programme target mentally and physically disabled people with cerebral palsy, specifically the Spastics Children’s Association of Selangor and the Federal Territory. Held in weekly, hour-long sessions, it involves participants in recreational music-making and rhythm-based activities that aim to develop, strengthen and improve health and well-being. Began in September 2000, RISE is attracting a growing number of child participants; older members have since moved on to other educational and vocational centres.

For the ongoing tenacity of their volunteers and their creative work with youth living with cerebral palsy, the RISE programme is awarded the Best Community Arts or Arts Education Project Award, sponsored the British Council.

4. Artseefartsee Cross-Cultural Champion of the Arts Award

  • Marion D’Cruz
For decades, Marion D’Cruz has been an indefatigable advocate and lobbyist of the arts, through her work with the Five Arts Centre and more recently, Arts Network Asia. This rule-breaker’s works have always been eclectic, drawing from her dance background to develop genre-defying works that speak of things she is passionate about.

For her role as mentor, supporter, teacher and friend to artists from various fields; and for her continued efforts at encouraging and empowering work among arts practitioners here and around the region, Marion D’Cruz is the winner of Artseefartsee Cross-Cultural Champion of the Arts Award 2006

5. BOH Cameronian Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Dato’ Syed Alwi
With a career that has spanned more than half a century, Syed Alwi is truly one of the pioneers of Malayan / Malaysian theatre. In 1967, he was among those who led a historic coup against the expatriate-run Malayan Arts Theatre Group, which successfully put Malaysian theatre in English into the hands of locals, for the first time.

After the 1969 riots, this actor, producer, director, teacher and writer led the three-day festival “Genta Rasa”, which brought together fashion shows and poetry recitals, dance and theatre, in a first ever cross-language production that was attended by thousands.

In the 1970s, Syed Alwi became part of the State-sanctioned power equation that strongly advocated the construction of a Malaysian theatre that was rooted in the local context, together with Usman Awang, Krishen Jit, Noordin Hassan and Rahim Razali.

For a lifetime of fearless advocacy and an unending commitment towards the development of Malaysian theatre and the arts, Syed Alwi is the recipient of the BOH Cameronian Lifetime Achievement Award for 2006.

To 'rock the boat'...it's exactly your kind of posting that makes open forums like this the unfortunate joke that they are! What do you mean by 'crooks and cowards'? You of course are entitled to an opinion, but for the love of God, make it an intelligent one!

How come someone like Fahmi Fadzil can be nominated - and then win! - for "Most Promising Artist" award? The criteria for this award according to the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards website is that it is for "an artist who is NOT YET established in a particular field but who, it is felt, shows evidence of a creative sensibility and a sustained involvement in the arts." Fahmi Fadzil has already been active in local theatre and TV for some years now. The very fact that he was already a judge for the theatre category for the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2006 indicates that he is already someone respected in the arts community for his work. Why else would he be asked to be a judge, right? Let me make it clear that this is not intended as a personal attack on Fahmi Fadzil. I have a lot of respect for him as an artist. My criticism is directed at the awards system, at a matter of principle, not the recipient of the award per se.
