In the 1970s, Syed Alwi became part of the State-sanctioned power equation that strongly advocated the construction of a Malaysian theatre that was rooted in the local context, together with Usman Awang, Krishen Jit, Noordin Hassan and Rahim Razali.
For a lifetime of fearless advocacy and an unending commitment towards the development of Malaysian theatre and the arts, Syed Alwi is the recipient of the BOH Cameronian Lifetime Achievement Award for 2006.

| To 'rock the boat'...it's exactly your kind of posting that makes open forums like this the unfortunate joke that they are! What do you mean by 'crooks and cowards'? You of course are entitled to an opinion, but for the love of God, make it an intelligent one!

| How come someone like Fahmi Fadzil can be nominated - and then win! - for "Most Promising Artist" award? The criteria for this award according to the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards website is that it is for "an artist who is NOT YET established in a particular field but who, it is felt, shows evidence of a creative sensibility and a sustained involvement in the arts." Fahmi Fadzil has already been active in local theatre and TV for some years now. The very fact that he was already a judge for the theatre category for the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2006 indicates that he is already someone respected in the arts community for his work. Why else would he be asked to be a judge, right? Let me make it clear that this is not intended as a personal attack on Fahmi Fadzil. I have a lot of respect for him as an artist. My criticism is directed at the awards system, at a matter of principle, not the recipient of the award per se.
