Cheras: Barisan Nasional, the masters of advertising

Jalan Raja Muda: Pas obviously doesn't have the same budget, but they have lots of ropes

Jalan Raja Muda: Translation: Yes Allah Yes God, please give victory to the PAS government in the elections. Amen.

Tasik Titiwangsa: 50th Merdeka bilboards are left conveniently around -- looking like so many extra BN posters. PAS tumpang glamour.

Jalan Brickfields: Tie a red rocket ribbon round the old oak tree...

Brickfields (Bukit Bintang Constituency): Lee Chong Meng says in Tamil: "15 years of dedicated service to the Bkt Bintang constituency". But he didn't win the last elections. And the one before that he only won by walkover

The other side of Brickfields (Lembah Pantai Constituency): Sharizat and Nurul Izzah try to stop traffic

Still in Brickfields: Strategically stuck to Nurul Izzah's booth. Meanwhile, Independent candidate Periasamy rejects claims that he is a supporter of HINDRAF or the five ISA detainees, but is speaking for all ISA detainees

Nearby Nurul's booth: Her father smiles on, but cannot take part (strange don't you think for a man who is not running to appear in so many posters?)

In the Bilik Gerakan Keadilan in Kota Damansara: Elizabeth Wong and Sivarasa Rasiah's buntings hide behind chairs

Subang: The kid who shot Lingam

DAP HQ in Cheras: Who needs a bilboard when you have your own building

Cheras: The 3-D cold war symbol looks in need of a perestroika

Bukit Damansara: Everybody just wants to be a crony

Back in Jalan Cheras: Translation: MCA works hard at building; Rocket simply shoots spittle

Taman Seputeh: Translation: Want to serve, Want progress, Want results, Want MCA

Subang: The man who dares to fail, dares to fail again

Kampung Baru: It's been raining everyday. How will the weather look on March 8?

Brickfields: Somebody should advice BN to avoid sticking its flag in front of incriminating evidence

Brickfields: ...or unfortunate juxtapositions.

Photo Essay: The General Election Poster Wars by Pang Khee Teik

If I were a Martian backpacking through Malaysia right now, having been sold on its Truly Asia diversity, the variety of coloured decorations presently hung out on the streets would appear to me like mardi gras or a celebration of some victory. Or some kind of nationwide beauty pageant for ugly people.

I could immediately affirm that indeed, this is a place that celebrates and embraces different coloured flags, and presumably, peoples too. Where privileges and respect are accorded not based on one's colour, where society is administered not by fear but by common hope and where different ideologies exist to offer balance to personal and communal impulses.

Gosh, now I sound like some Martian Luther King Jr. Enjoy the photos and happy voting for change!

The Daching and the Rubbish, I think this is the poster that defines Elections 2008! Once again caught by an astute eye! If anyone is scratching their head still and wondering by the results turned out so horrendously for our dear friends of the coalition they should stick this one up on their wall. And make sure you charge them for it. Bravo! (in afterthought give Dr M his for free lah, after all he did sit on the office chair for a number of decades).

Good one Pang! Enjoyed it very much. :) My fave is the one where PAS has got lots of ropes. ;)

It was shot right outside my condo where they have set up a Sharizat booth. It is a strange place to set up a booth as the path they are on is a cul de sac. There's my condo (less than 50% occupied, a lot of expats from India), and the condo down the path (also lots of expats from India) and some old houses. Maybe that's why her poster makes her look like a Bollywood star...
