I Like Monsters! by Pang

From the editor’s recommendation: Attempting to create a democratic space for art, Reka’s Free Show promises an “environment relatively free from censorship or the imposition of any institutional standards.” On a first-come-first-served basis, this exhibition allows artists (or anybody who wants to be called an artist) to put up their art (or anything they want to call art).

From general opinion, the works last year were more interesting and varied. I wasn’t there so I can’t say. But here are what some of the buyers and artists have to say for themselves this year…

hey Pang, I really like most (note-most) of the pics here. Guess you took them? Has not anyone noticed that? ahem... that Pang does photography?

I am especially drawn by The Grove and said so to Sek Thim and I thought 'Fillings' was so creative. I prefer this year's show.....it is more varied. And I wonder what Rahmat Haron will do with the pubic hair? To each his own. But out of curiousity--any guesses?

are you, Pang secretly in love with this Mas girl? How come so many pics of her and she not even a painter/artist or wannabe?

I would like to add to mr. james coment on the exhibition well i think its true what he points out that we must have lots more exhibition on the outsside of the usual gallery space...i think sik tim should try to organise more of this type of exhibition...it would be interesting to find out what people reaction on it.There is lots of public space that we could manipulate and use to exhibit.Reka space is too small and boring and nowdays public art are more important that the pale looking gallery space and invite certain people so that u can sell the works exhibit,we hope siks tim can organise these type of shows in the future

thanks

re: public art shows?

i personally don't think that having exhibitions in a gallery is 'lame'. of course that is the standard of art exhibitions. and i DO like it when art moves out of the gallery. but as for this show in particular, its done for the purpose of sale! how many buyers would walk into kamdar or devi's corner and buy and artwork? u might say "they should!" but come on. let's be realistic. are u serious?
ok. to have art outside a gallery space may be 'exciting'. but exciting for who? for the artist? for the artist's friends? do u really think that ah meng and ali on the street would appreciate to see art on the street? would they even care? just because u put ur work outside the gallery don't mean that you are 'bringing the art to the public'.
if ah meng and ali are really interested in art, they would walk into a gallery, right? and how many 'lay person' do actually go to a gallery? let's face it, malaysians are generally not interested in art. or the kind of art that is out there at the moment.
or perhaps this is the fault of the gallery. most art galleries exude a sense of elitism, that only art-educated/rich/'sophisticated' ppl can understand the ever-present 'abstract' paintings.
so before we go running around outside with our art, let's see something more exciting in the 'pale' and 'lame' gallery first.

Why are you complaining about Sek Thim having the show in an art gallery, his OWN gallery? Let Sek Thim do what he knows best to do, because there are other artists or enthusiasts who are putting in the effort to hold exhibitions at alternative spaces. Sek Thim has invested a lot of his own money into this gallery and he has his own vision. Please respect that.

Like most of us who don't care for armchair commentators, I'd recommend people pitch in and try organizing "exciting" shows themselves.

That last post is directed at Mr Mark Lee as well, please.

I happen to like the way Reka operates. Street art/activism is of course a different ball of game altogether and there are ppl who are into that and that's great. Don't try to make everybody the same mah.

I think we just followers and not thinkers that want to change how society perseption on art.
For example hishamudin rais and a group of friends set up art exhibition and other activities in seremban. Its one of the step to educate or at least shows the comunity what art is all about!
Exhibition in art gallery is allways be there...come onla how long we must just exhibit in art gallery..we should move anyway we are living a post-modern age!
Art is all about context...not form, otherwise malaysian art will never grow..indonesia,thailand,singapore artists are all putting artwork in public space...our art should be alive and not just stuck with our own shallow mentality...wake up guys...stop sleeping and giving art gallery to manipulate your gifted talend..do your own thing!

Our art scene is NOT dull. There is heaps of energy flying around, if you'd just take some time to go to one of the openings and talk to people. The ideas and the passion are pure technicolor, only let down by a lack of self-confidence.

'Our art scene is dull'. That line is as old and limp as a flacid penis.

Go have a wank then come back and play. As an artist, I highly recommend it.
